Small Business Saturday is the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, and this year it falls on November 27. As retailers consider ways to build excitement for this special #ShopSmall party, Carol Schroeder, retailer Orange Tree Imports, offers some great advice.
“There are many ways to use the small business Saturday opportunity to attract customers to your store,” she wrote in a recent blog post. Some ideas include: “special events such as book signings and trunk displays; discounts on certain products; and gifts. If you want to promote your entire neighborhood, consider rewarding customers who visit three or more participating stores with a chance to enter a raffle. We often ask Monroe Street businesses to contribute gift cards and put one or more in each Shop Small tote bag as prizes.
Another promotional idea is to use Shop Small signage, decals and images from American Express, available as part of their small boutique initiative.
“These documents, as well as many of those for Small-Business Saturday, highlight the American Express logo,” Schroeder said. “But I don’t blame them for taking credit for helping us promote the idea of shopping local – and for being inclusive in welcoming all customers.”
