New Steam Discount Rules Will Let Developers Cut Prices More Often

Valve is changing how discounts work on Steam to allow creators to put their games on sale more often.

After March 28, 2022, the cooldown between discounts on Steam will be reduced from six weeks to four weeks, which means there must be a minimum of 28 days between the end of a discount and the start of a discount. another one.

The new rule will apply to all types of promotions and discounts on Steam, with the sole exception of Valve’s four main seasonal sales: Lunar New Year Sale, Summer Sale, Fall Sale and winter sales.

The company explained that the new rules are intended to make rebate eligibility more predictable while providing more opportunities for participation throughout the year. The addition of new wholesale discount tools (now in open beta) will also allow Steam developers to see all of the promotions their titles are eligible for in one place.

The toolkit will offer options to filter specific games and events, register to participate, and set discounts. It will also flag when a game is eligible for promotional events that are in the cooldown period.

Specific refresh rules

  • You can run an introductory discount, but once your introductory discount ends, you can’t run any more discounts for 28 days.
  • It is not possible to discount your product for 28 days following a price increase in any currency.
  • Discounts cannot be run within 28 days of your previous discount, with the exception of Steam-wide seasonal events.
  • Discounts for seasonal sales cannot be executed within 28 days of the release of your title, within 28 days of the end of your introductory discount, or within 28 days of a price increase in any currency .
  • You cannot change your price while a promotion is in progress.
  • It is not possible to reduce a product by more than 90% or less than 10%.
  • Personalized discounts cannot last more than two weeks or last less than one day
